When we were learning the craft of rowing, we belonged to Buzz. He was the artist molding us to his form. In Florida, I once rode in the launch for part of one practice while Buzz was choosing the first boat. I sat in the bow while he drove the launch, calculated stroke cadences, switched oarsmen between the two eights, and wrote notes about each of us: all the while laughing and cursing to himself. We were his creation. On the water we came to see ourselves thorugh his eyes, molded as we were in his image. Once we had achieved the basic form, however, we were no longer just reflections of his art. Individuals reemerged to form the character of the boat.1Stephen Kiesling, The Shell Game: Reflections on Rowing and the Pursuit of Excellence Oregon: Nordic Knight Press, 1982, 133.

Coaching Staff

From its inception the team was almost exclusively coached by fellow St. Mary's students until recently when the team added two SMC crew alumni to their coaching staff. Paul and Kristin Conlin are the head coaches of the team and work in conjunction with a student coach to train the team. All coaches work under the directions of the Executive Board and collaborate to satisfy the club mission statement. For information on officers and team constitution, go to the "Forms" page.
