St. Mary's College of Maryland Rowing
SMC Crew has operated as a successful club sport for over twenty years. As a sports team of St. Mary's College of Maryland, the crew team competes against other collegiate and club rowing teams within the Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and New Jersey area.
Rowing on the tidal St. Mary's River (pictured at right), the team's practice course is roughly 5k upriver, and can stretch to the mouth of the Patuxent River downstream. Almost exclusively residential waterfront property on the teams practice course yields scarce boat traffic that allows the team to practice undisturbed in the early morning and late afternoon. The forty member team maintains a fleet of 3 8+s, 4 4+s, 1 2x, and a recreational single. The fleet is housed in the Rowing Center which had a soft opening Fall 2007.
This is where the tough come out to play while the weak sleep soundly in their beds.
This, my friends, is where we have thrown our lives.
As the campus sleeps, we sign our souls over to the mighty and beautiful St. Mary's River.
We may show love to others on the outside,
but the river is the blood that runs through our hearts.
Jeff Carter, class of 2000
